How to Manage Transit Days

How Daysium logs transit days under the UK Statutory Residence Test, and how to change a day that should count.

Written by Bojana

Daysium logs transit days for you under the UK Statutory Residence Test (SRT), so a stopover you spent simply passing through the UK is left out of your day count. This article explains how Daysium identifies a transit day, and what to do when a day should count after all.

Note: Transit days work differently in other tax jurisdictions. This article covers transit days under the UK Statutory Residence Test only. For what a transit day is and what breaks one, see What Are Transit Days? (UK Statutory Residence Test).

How Daysium identifies a transit day

Daysium logs a day as a transit day when all of the following are true:

  • You arrived in the UK from a country outside the UK

  • You were still in the UK at midnight

  • You left the UK the next day

  • You travelled on to a different country from the one you arrived from

Daysium works this out from your recorded movement. You do not need to do anything, and a transit day is left out of your day count automatically.

Note: Daysium identifies transit days from the countries you travelled between, not from where you stayed. Staying at a city hotel rather than an airport hotel does not change whether a day is logged as transit.

Why a stopover counts at first

A UK day is counted when you are in the UK at midnight, so a stopover appears in your day count to begin with. Daysium can only identify the day as transit once your onward travel the next day has been recorded, at which point the day is removed from your count.

This is expected. If you have just arrived in the UK on a stopover, give it until your onward travel is recorded before checking your count.

Where to see your transit days

  1. Open Daysium Mobile and select your UK SRT rule card.

  2. Tap the forward arrow to view your day entries.

  3. A day Daysium has logged as transit is marked Transit Day.

How to change a day that should count

Sometimes you spend a stopover in a way that means the day should count — meeting friends, visiting family, attending an event, or doing any work.

  1. Tap the date to open the Self-Declared Days panel at the top of the screen. Transit Day will already be selected.

  2. Deselect Transit Day.

  3. Confirm at the prompt. Daysium explains what the change means for your day count.

Your day count updates after recalculation, usually within a few minutes.

If you deselect a day and then realise it was a genuine transit day, you can select Transit Day again on the same day entry.

Important: Add supporting evidence to any day you change — flight details, boarding passes, or hotel receipts. See How to Add Evidence to Your Timeline.

Things to know

  • A transit day cannot also be a work day. If a day is logged as transit, it cannot also count as a work day.

  • The judgement is yours. Whether something you did broke your transit is your call, not Daysium's. If you are unsure, speak to your tax adviser.

  • Changes are saved automatically and are reflected in your day count once recalculation has run.
